Kiggans Stands Up for Women’s Sports
WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congresswoman Jen Kiggans (VA-02) voted to pass H.R. 28, the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, a bill that protects fair competition in women’s sports by enshrining Title IX sex-based protections.
“As a former coach and athlete who is the mother of two active girls, saving women’s sports is personal to me,” said Congresswoman Kiggans. “I was proud to vote for the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act today to ensure female athletes can fairly compete in sports, giving them the protections and recognition they deserve. This important legislation is a huge win for women, and I am glad to see common sense prevail. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to stand up for women and quickly pass this bill so it can become law.”
Background:
Congresswoman Kiggans championed legislation protecting female athletes in Virginia during the Virginia State Senate’s 2022 session. SB766, which she introduced on January 21, 2022, would have enshrined sex-based protections in Virginia law.
H.R. 28, the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act:
- Ensures women and girls’ fair competition in sports events.
- Defines gender based on reproductive biology and genetics under Title IX.
- Prohibits males identifying as women from competing in women’s sports with federal funding.
