Kiggans Announces Winners of 2024 Congressional Art Competition

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA: This week, at a reception hosted at Virginian Wesleyan University, Congresswoman Jen Kiggans (VA-02) announced Alex Hudson as the winner of Virginia’s Second District 2024 Congressional Art Competition. Alex Hudson is currently in his senior year at Catholic High School and won with his piece titled Waves of Freedom.

The following students were announced as runners-up:

  • Fatima Huezo-Menendez from Salem High School was awarded second place for her work titled Stages of My Roses
  • Alexis Lee from Landstown High School was awarded third place for her work titled Hawaiian Dream
  • Lauren Eichman from Nansemond River High School received the “People’s Choice Award” for her piece titled Green Rose
  • Nathan Jones from the Nansemond River High School received the “Spouse’s Choice Award” for his piece titled Emjay
  • Kylee Scott from The Governor’s School for the Arts received the “Chief’s Choice Award” for her piece titled The Little Drummer Boy

“I want to thank each and every student for their thoughtful and creative submissions,” said Congresswoman Kiggans. “We have some amazing student artists here in Hampton Roads, and I couldn’t be prouder of these young people! Congratulations to all the winners. I can’t wait to see your artwork hanging in the U.S. Capitol and all of my offices!”

In total, the Congresswoman received 73 submissions this year from eight different high schools across Virginia’s Second Congressional District. As the first-place winner, Alex Hudson is invited to a ribbon cutting ceremony in Washington, D.C. and his artwork will be on display in the U.S. Capitol for an entire year. The second-place winning entry will hang in Congresswoman Kiggans’ Washington, D.C. office for a year. The remaining winners will have their artwork on display in the Congresswoman’s multiple district offices. 

Started in 1982, the Congressional Art Competition is an annual contest run by the U.S. House of Representatives where high school students from across the country are invited to showcase their artistic abilities.
