Kiggans Demands Accountability for Inadequate Care and Failed Leadership at Hampton VA Medical Center

WASHINGTON, D.C. —  Rep. Jen Kiggans (VA-02) sent a letter to Secretary of Veterans Affairs Doug Collins regarding the lack of stable leadership, accountability for poor staffing, and proper response to years of concerning reports from the Office of Inspector General (OIG) at the Hampton VA Medical Center (VAMC).

Read excerpts of the letter:

“Since July 2024, the Hampton VAMC has been without stable leadership, which has negatively impacted veterans in my district who rely on Hampton for their care. Further, I find it disturbing that, instead of adequately disciplining personnel, VA appears to reassign them to other facilities or the VISN level.”

“As you know, the Hampton VAMC serves and provides care to approximately 69,000 veterans in our heavily military populated area of Hampton Roads, and yet, from 2022-2024, VA OIG published multiple inspection reports that “substantiated a range of concerning allegations related to clinical care.” Despite the numerous OIG reports, and what appears to be a revolving door of facility leadership, little has changed. Hampton continues to be plagued by significant patient care and safety issues, an ever-growing pile of OIG reports, and an executive leadership that fails to meet the needs of the veterans and their families it serves.”

“I trust you would agree with me that we must have a dedicated, qualified professional at Hampton’s helm to ensure that our veterans in Hampton Roads are served with the best care and level of service they have earned. I believe that many of the ongoing and persistent issues at VA that directly impact patients could be solved by simply ensuring that effective and stable leadership is in place. Thank you for your continued partnership and commitment to those who have served.”
