Rep. Jen Kiggans Votes “Yes” On Landmark Legislation
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Jen Kiggans (VA-02) released the following statement regarding the One Big Beautiful Bill Act:
“Today I cast my vote in favor of H.R. 1, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA).
It’s important to acknowledge that no legislation of this magnitude is perfect. My vote reflects a pragmatic assessment that the sum total of this bill will benefit Coastal Virginia and America.
This bill represents months of intense negotiations and hard work to put working families first. It delivers real results that Virginians and Americans across the country have been waiting for and voted for in November— relief for their pocketbooks, security at the border, and strength in our military.
This legislation makes key tax cuts permanent for middle-class families and small businesses, eliminates most federal taxes on tips and overtime, and protects seniors by expanding critical tax benefits. It also represents the largest investment in our national defense in a generation—restoring American deterrence, rebuilding our Navy, and improving the quality of life for our servicemembers.
The bill includes targeted investments in border security, giving our frontline agents the tools and technology they need to combat the flow of fentanyl, human trafficking, and illegal crossings. It also reins in Washington’s wasteful spending while ensuring that vital programs like SNAP and Medicaid remain strong for those who truly need them.
This legislation also takes meaningful steps to strengthen work requirements for able-bodied, childless adults receiving public assistance, while fully preserving full benefits for seniors, individuals with disabilities, and parents of young children. These changes are not about cutting support. They are about restoring the core mission of programs like SNAP and Medicaid—providing temporary help and promoting long-term independence—while strengthening their solvency.
These important, growth-focused provisions are why I ultimately voted for final passage, though H.R. 1 is far from perfect. But we don’t live in a perfect world—we live in reality. That is why for months I worked publicly and privately to protect certain clean energy tax credits and preserve health care access for those on Medicaid who truly need it.
When you look at what this bill accomplishes overall — the tangible relief it gives working families, the investments it makes in our national defense, and the long-overdue resources it provides to secure our border — it is clear that it moves our commonwealth and our country forward. My vote reflects a commitment to delivering results, protecting Virginia families, and restoring confidence in the promise of American strength and prosperity.”
